the process
-
First I brainstormed what location and brand I wanted to choose. I ended up selecting Skims, and with that, I chose New York, specifically during the Roaring Twenties, for a capsule collection that would release around New Year's.
-
For my mood board, I pulled diverse imagery featuring examples of different aspects of New York and the overall culture of the 1920s. I then pulled 6 icons from my imagery for my patterns as well as 6 color swatches to create my color story for my line.
-
Once I had chosen my icons and color story, I then created my patterns in Adobe Illustrator based on the Skims consumer and current trend research.
-
Lastly, I created my capsule collection showcasing eight current styles for the upcoming FW season.
concept Board
Once I chose my location, I began my moodboard searching for iconography, imagery, and colors to use in the final collection. I then created the finalized board, including a well-researched color story and iconography based on what Skims was already creating.
pattern creation
After I had chosen my icons and color story, I then created my patterns in Adobe Illustrator based on the Skims consumer and current trend research, continuing the story of my line through patterns.
line sheets
Finally, I began creating my garment flats on Adobe Illustrator and incorporating my color story and finished patterns within the garments, as well as researching price lines and the target consumer.
the outcome
After this project, I learned how to build a cohesive brand from concept to final presentation. I started with a location-based inspiration and translated that into a clear visual identity through mood boards, colors, and patterns and then applied it across a full line sheet.
Taking on multiple roles also helped me understand how design, merchandising, and sales all connect, which made me more intentional about how each piece fits into a larger story. It really strengthened both my creative thinking and my attention to detail.
