Where Fashion Meets community

Fashion is typically associated with trends, designers, and worldwide companies, but it can also serve as a powerful instrument for community building. Through my experience working with WEAR RVA, I had the opportunity to see how fashion can connect people, support local creatives, and strengthen a regional fashion community.

WEAR RVA focuses on empowering local young women via fashion for charity, allowing designers, artists, and fashion aficionados to collaborate and share their creations. Being involved allowed me to witness firsthand the influence that a supportive creative network can have on emerging professionals. Local organizations like this serve a crucial role in providing a platform for designers to display their ideas and make real connections in the industry.

I began working as a model for WEARRVA during my senior year of high school, and the experience was so rewarding that I knew I wanted to be involved again the following year. I approached the founders and asked if there was anything I could do to help. Over the next two years, I progressed to the position of junior assistant director. This experience has provided me with invaluable knowledge, as well as the opportunity to assist with event facilitation, sponsor outreach, and model coordination.

One of the most amazing aspects of working with WEAR RVA is experiencing how fashion can unite people from various backgrounds. Events and projects facilitated collaboration among designers, students, and community members. These interactions highlighted the importance of building strong relationships within the fashion industry.

Through this experience, I also gained a deeper appreciation for the value of supporting local fashion communities. Many creative movements originate at the local level, despite the fashion industry's often global perception. When designers, organizations, and communities support each other, they create opportunities for innovation and growth.

My participation at WEAR RVA confirmed my belief that fashion is more than simply clothing; it is about culture, creativity, and connection. Supporting organizations that promote local talent is critical to fostering a more inclusive and collaborative fashion industry, as it not only elevates diverse voices but also encourages innovation and strengthens community ties within the industry. Experiences like this remind me that fashion can unite people and drive positive change.
